The National Mall got a new memorial yesterday, if only briefly. As part of One Billion Rising, Baltimore-based feminist group FORCE installed a temporary memorial recognizing survivors of sexual assault. The group greated giant letters out of a statement from a rape survivor and floated the eight-foot-tall words onto the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial.
I have been waiting for this for 84 years
It is…how you say a…metaphor
"So much has been said about the girls over the years. But we have never found an answer. It didn’t matter in the end how old they had been, or that they were girls, but only that we had loved them and that they hadn’t heard us calling, still do not hear us calling them from out of those rooms, where they went to be alone for all time and where we will never find the pieces to put them back together"
The Virgin Suicides (1999)
Columbine Goldsmith was born in Los Angeles, California and started taking photographs after her father, a cinematographer, gave her an old Nikon FG-20 on a trip to Mexico. After graduating from Wesleyan University in Connecticut, she lived in Europe and then returned to the US to start assisting photographers such as Patrick Demarchelier, Anthony Word, Sebastian Kim and many others.
before I’ve called them intelligent or brave
I am sorry I made it sound as though
something as simple as what you’re born with
is all you have to be proud of
when you have broken mountains with your wit
from now on I will say things like
you are resilient, or you are extraordinary
not because I don’t think you’re beautiful
but because I need you to know
you are more than that
I love the summer rains
